“There were moments when I wasn’t sure this session was going to make it on the air. But it did. And it was magical. Especially BECAUSE it was so wildly raw.” – Rachel Reynolds, KCRW

Recently, TSLC shared the stage with Daniel Johnston for the LA stop of his final tour – which quickly became the highlight of our year. So much thanks and love goes out to Ben Lee for putting the LA show together and for including us in such a special night. Daniel Johnston is one of the pioneers of indie music. Before Nirvana, before Elliott Smith, there was Daniel Johnston. His story is particularly inspiring because he spent periods of his life in psychiatric institutions battling schizophrenia and manic depression. We are in complete awe of his raw talent and ability to continue to overcome so much. Check out the documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston, for more about Johnston’s prolific career and ongoing battle with mental illness.

Here’s us singing back up for Daniel Johnston on Morning Becomes Eclectic, alongside other special guests Lucius, Ben Lee, Mike Watt, Maria Taylor, Guy Blakeslee, and Joey Waronker.

For more on Daniel Johnston’s (allegedly) final tour, check out these two beautiful pieces: “Working Through the Sadness of Daniel Johnston’s Last – for Now – Tour” by Peter C. Baker on The New Yorker and a heartfelt review of our LA show, “Indie Rock Hero Daniel Johnston Summons an All-Star Band to Morning Becomes Eclectic,” byRachel Reynolds for KCRW’s music blog.
